Published 5:22 PM EDT Mar 26, 2014I've heard it all before. You don't look like a motorcycle rider. Aren't you too short to ride? That's such a dangerous hobby. Why don't you take up scrapbooking instead?There's nothing wrong with scrapbooking, and I'm sure part of me would really enjoy it, but I've always loved the idea of motorcycles.

No, I'm not into the leathery-skin hardened, rough and tumble Harley biker crowd many imagine when I say I'm a motorcyclist. I don't do huge group rides, nor do I hang out in biker bars.

I'm 5'2', petite with a quiet, geeky personality, and I can barely drink one beer. I do, however, love the outdoors, travel and adventures. House of the dying sun for free lyrics. Motorcycling combines all three. And there's no other way to get closer to the road, to the journey, than on two wheels. Cars are comfy, but in a car trip you often hear, 'Are we there yet?'

On a motorcycle, the entire journey is the 'there.' USA TODAYYes, there's a big danger factor with motorcycles. There aren't any airbags, roll bars or crumple zones. You're exposed to the elements: Rain, snow, wind, heat, cold, flying pebbles, bugs oh the bugs.

But that's part of the adventure. It's what makes it part of the challenge.I've done long rides before. I've ridden from Daytona, Fla., to Catonsville, Md., in 16 hours.

I flew down to Chattanooga, Tenn., to pick up my BMW F800ST and rode it home to Catonsville. I've ridden to Deal's Gap in North Carolina, where the infamous 'Tail of the Dragon' is: An 11-mile stretch of U.S. Route 129 with 318 turns.Now, I feel ready to take on the Iron Butt Association's SaddleSore 1000 challenge. Riding 1,000 miles within 24 hours.Together with my boyfriend, Marcin, who is just as enamored with motorcycling as I am, we came up with a plan to visit his grandmother in Fort Myers Beach, Fla.

The ride there from Catonsville is about 1,080 miles. Perfect.We leave Saturday morning (March 29) at around 4:30 a.m. We'll have a witness sign our departure form and will be collecting gas station receipts with time stamps to file with the Iron Butt Association, so they can certify our ride and send us a badge upon completion.I expect to meet some interesting people along the way. Coming back, we'll take the slower way around. First, we'll head down to the Florida Keys, then hit Miami, St. Augustine, Savannah, Ga., New Bern, N.C. And Richmond, Va.
